The pile had a heartbeat. Old timber sighed under a hot afternoon, mangled drywall dusted the air like pale sand, and a crushed orange sofa exhaled a sour perfume that settled in the throat. From my front stoop in Echo Park I watched neighbors circle the mess like vultures and felt the city press in on all sides — the freeway rumble from downtown Los Angeles, the distant clang of a harbor crane in Long Beach, the calling gulls above a Santa Monica afternoon. We needed a dumpster, and we needed one fast.
