The Last Load on a Los Angeles Morning

At 6:12 on a Saturday morning in Pasadena, the old house gave up its first secret: a cloud of dust poured from the attic window and drifted into the cool air like smoke. Maya stood on the driveway, squinting up at it. Behind her, a dumpster sat beside the curb, its steel sides beaded with dew. By nightfall, she hoped, the container would be gone—and the house her grandparents had loved would be ready for its next chapter.

That was the plan, anyway. Then the work began.

Maya had inherited the two-story Craftsman after her grandmother moved closer to family. The home had good bones: a deep front porch, honey-colored trim, and a lemon tree leaning over the side gate. Out back, a warped patio table waited beside a tangle of broken planters.
