Many Los Angeles residents pay to haul away furniture and old appliances without realizing the City will pick them up for free. LA Sanitation’s bulky item pickup is one of the most useful and least understood City services. It’s also limited: it isn’t designed for construction debris or for large one-time cleanouts on a deadline. This guide explains how the free service works, what it refuses, the free drop-off alternatives, and when renting a dumpster is still the better move.
How LASAN’s bulky item pickup works
According to LA Sanitation and Environment (LASAN), bulky item pickup is an unlimited curbside collection for single-family residents at no additional charge. Key details:
- Who qualifies: LASAN describes the service as available to single-family residents. If your building’s trash is collected by a private hauler rather than LASAN, ask that hauler what bulky item options it offers.
- When: pickup happens on your regular trash collection day.
- How to schedule: at least one business day before your collection day, through LASAN’s online form, the MyLA311 app or website, or by phone.
- Where to place items: at the curb on your collection day, following the instructions you receive when you schedule.
What LASAN takes and what it refuses

| Furniture: sofas, chairs, tables, dressers | Construction materials: concrete, bricks, dirt |
| Mattresses and box springs | Auto parts and motor oil |
| Toilets and sinks | Commercial appliances |
| Carpet, rolled and tied | Paint and chemicals |
| Large pieces of wood and doors | Medicine and needles |
| E-waste such as TVs and computers | Fluorescent lights |
| Cardboard, unless you have Move In/Move Out service |

Free drop-off options in the City
Monthly bulky item drop-off events
LASAN also runs free drop-off events at five District Yards, open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on event days. The remaining 2026 dates listed on its page are November 21 and December 12. Locations:
- East Valley: 11050 Pendleton St., Sun Valley
- West Valley: 8840 Vanalden Ave., Northridge
- Harbor: 1400 N. Gaffey St., San Pedro
- West LA: 2027 Stoner Ave., Los Angeles
- Central LA: 2201 E. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles
S.A.F.E. Centers for hazardous items
Paint, chemicals, batteries and fluorescent lights go to LASAN’s free S.A.F.E. Centers, which accept up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit.
Tires
Through LASAN’s tire recycling program, City residents can drop off up to four tires per calendar year, without rims, at participating LASAN yards for free on weekday mornings. Bring a state ID and a utility bill.
Mattresses
Beyond bulky pickup, California’s Bye Bye Mattress program offers free drop-off sites, and retailers delivering a new mattress must offer to take the old one back for free.
If you live outside the City of LA
Bulky item programs vary by city. In unincorporated LA County, CleanLA says most residents receive up to four free bulky item pickups per year through their trash hauler. Contact your hauler to schedule. Other cities, such as Long Beach, Pasadena, Glendale and Santa Monica, run their own programs; check your city’s sanitation or public works website.
When the free service is enough
- You’re replacing a couch, a mattress or a few pieces of furniture.
- You’re clearing a garage of household items, not building materials.
- You can wait for your next collection day.
- You have curb space and can move items there yourself.
- Most of what you’re getting rid of appears on the accepted list.
When a dumpster makes more sense
Free pickup doesn’t fit every situation. A rented roll-off bin is usually the better choice when:
- The debris is from construction or demolition. LASAN’s bulky pickup doesn’t take concrete, bricks or dirt, and the City requires mixed C&D debris to go through a permitted hauler to a City-certified processing facility. Remodels, roofing and demolition belong in a bin from a permitted hauler.
- You’re working on a deadline. Estate cleanouts, move-outs and pre-sale cleanups often can’t wait for collection day.
- The volume is huge. Even an unlimited program has practical limits on what a crew can collect at a curb in one stop, and piles left on the street for days can draw complaints.
- The material is loose. Bags of clutter, broken boxes and miscellaneous junk aren’t what bulky pickup is built for.
- You don’t receive LASAN service. Apartment buildings served by private haulers need another solution.
A dumpster’s right size depends on volume and weight; our dumpster sizes guide helps estimate it.
The combined approach
For large cleanouts, combining the free service with a paid bin often costs the least:
- Donate usable items, such as cabinets, doors and furniture, to a Habitat LA ReStore or another charity.
- Schedule bulky pickup for the furniture, mattresses and e-waste the City accepts.
- Take hazardous items to a S.A.F.E. Center.
- Rent a smaller dumpster for the rest: construction debris, loose junk and anything on LASAN’s refused list.
Removing the bulky furniture first can mean a smaller bin, fewer rental days and less weight. See our dumpster cost guide for the factors that drive the price.
Avoid illegal dumping

Leaving items on a sidewalk or alley without scheduling a pickup is illegal dumping, and it creates a problem for neighbors and City crews. If you see dumped items, you can report them through MyLA311. When you hire anyone to haul your items, use a reputable, permitted company. Cheap haulers who dump loads illegally can leave you responsible for the cleanup.
Preparing items for pickup
- List everything when you schedule. Describing each item helps the crew bring the right truck and avoids items being left behind.
- Roll and tie carpet. LASAN specifically asks for carpet to be rolled and tied.
- Keep items separate from your carts. Leave space so the automated trucks can still empty your black, blue and green bins.
- Don’t block the sidewalk. Leave a clear path for pedestrians, wheelchairs and strollers.
- Don’t put items out too early. Items left out for days invite rummaging, scattering and additional dumping by others. Follow the timing in your confirmation.
- Pull out hazardous parts. Remove batteries from electronics where you can, and don’t leave paint cans or chemicals with your pile.

FAQ
Is LA’s bulky item pickup really free?
LASAN describes it as a service available at no additional charge for single-family residents receiving its trash service.
How many items can I put out?
LASAN calls the service unlimited. Schedule ahead and list what you’re putting out.
Will the City take my old water heater or refrigerator?
Household appliances are handled differently from commercial appliances, which LASAN refuses. Check the LASAN page or ask through MyLA311 when scheduling.
Can I put construction debris out for bulky pickup?
No. Concrete, bricks, dirt and other construction materials are on LASAN’s not-accepted list.
