Dumpster Rental in Los Angeles, CA
Compare roll-off dumpster companies across the City of Los Angeles, from the San Fernando Valley to San Pedro. Check permit rules, choose a size, and request free quotes.
Los Angeles is a huge place for a dumpster rental. The City of LA alone covers about 470 square miles, from hillside streets in the Hollywood Hills and Mount Washington to wide, flat blocks in the San Fernando Valley and dense apartment streets in Koreatown and Westlake. A hauler that is fast in Van Nuys may be a long drive from San Pedro, so it pays to compare companies near your job site.
This hub covers rules that apply anywhere in the City of LA, and lists haulers that say they serve the city. It also links to our neighborhood guides (Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys, Hollywood, Venice and more) and to separate cities in LA County such as Pasadena, Glendale and Long Beach, which have their own permit offices.
City of LA neighborhoods
These areas follow City of LA (StreetsLA) permit rules:
Los Angeles dumpster permit rules
Every neighborhood on this page is part of the City of Los Angeles, so street permits come from the City of LA Bureau of Street Services (StreetsLA), not a separate local office. A bin on a city street, sidewalk or parkway is covered by StreetsLA’s Building Materials Permit, which protects the public right-of-way. See the official StreetsLA Building Materials Permit page. The application is filed through the StreetsLA permit portal (bsspermits.lacity.org).
According to StreetsLA, the process goes like this: your request is reviewed, the location is pre-inspected, corrections are often issued, and other departments such as LADOT can get involved if a traffic control plan is needed. Approved permits are issued for a maximum of 60 days. StreetsLA also notes it won’t charge for a Building Materials Permit if you already hold an A- or B-Permit from the Bureau of Engineering. We don’t list fees here. Check the official page or ask your hauler, since many roll-off companies pull the permit for you.
Local tips for Los Angeles projects
Is your address really in the City of LA? Many “LA” mailing addresses are in other cities (Glendale, Burbank, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica) or in unincorporated LA County areas such as Altadena or East LA, and those places have different permit offices. Check your city before you apply for a permit.
Hillside streets. In the Hollywood Hills, Silver Lake, Mount Washington and the hills above the Valley, streets can be steep, curving and too narrow for a truck to set a large container. Ask the hauler whether its truck can reach your site, and think about a smaller bin or more frequent swaps.
Parking and street sweeping. On dense streets, curb space is the hard part. Watch posted street-sweeping days and red curbs, and keep the bin off the sidewalk unless your permit allows it. Plywood under the container helps protect a driveway.
Commercial and multifamily properties. The City of LA’s RecycLA program assigns franchise haulers by zone for most commercial and multifamily properties. If the job is at one of those properties, ask your hauler whether it is allowed to serve that address.
Construction waste recycling. Permitted remodels in LA often have construction-waste recycling requirements. See our CALGreen remodel debris guide.

Los Angeles dumpster rental FAQ
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Los Angeles?
Only if the bin will sit on public property such as the street, sidewalk or parkway. In the City of LA that is a StreetsLA Building Materials Permit. A bin fully on your private driveway usually needs no street permit.
How long does a StreetsLA permit last?
StreetsLA says approved Building Materials Permits are issued for a maximum of 60 days.
My address says Los Angeles. Which permit office do I use?
Check whether the property is inside the City of LA. Cities like Glendale, Burbank, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, and unincorporated county areas, use their own permit offices.
What size dumpster is most common in LA?
For most home remodels a 20-yard is the usual pick. On narrow or hillside streets, a 10-yard or a smaller “mini” bin can be easier to place.
What can't go in a dumpster in LA?
Hazardous materials such as paint, batteries, electronics, tires and chemicals are generally not allowed. See our guide to what can’t go in a dumpster in California.
